Fast Food

Of course a lunch of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean meat is ideal, but if your friends all want to go to the fast food joint near the school for lunch, you may think a healthy lunch is impossible. But don't worry. By making informed choices and remembering portion sizes, you can still enjoy a fast food meal without the guilt.

Here are some facts and tips to help you make the best choices at a fast food restaurant.

Fast Food Facts:

  • An average fast-food meal can run as high as 1,000 calories or more.
  • Most fast food restaurant Web sites list their nutritional information and let you build a meal to see its total calorie and carb content. Check it out before you go.
  • Mayonnaise can add an extra 90 calories per tablespoon and 9 grams of fat.
  • Cheese can add an extra 100 calories per ounce and 8 grams of fat.
  • There are about 47 grams of carbs in an average order of medium fries.

May I take your order?

  • Choose between mayo and cheese or better yet, skip both all together – your waistline will be happier for it.
  • Be "Happy", not "Super". Did you know that the kids' meal is the perfect serving size? Order regular or junior sized portions and stay away from foods that are "jumbo," "extra," "double," "biggie" or "super."
  • Many fast food restaurants offer healthier alternatives to fries such as apples slices, side salads and carrots. But, if you're really craving those fries, share a small order with a friend.
  • Just because it's fish or chicken doesn't automatically make it healthier. Remember Fried=Fat and Grilled = Go for it!
  • Many restaurants now offer yummy salads. These are great but remember to go light on the dressing and toppings – those calories add up fast!
  • So you splurged for lunch. Just remember to include healthier foods, like fruits and vegetables at your other meals.
